Three University of Southampton professors have been made Fellows of the Royal Academy of Engineering.
Professor Steve Elliott鈥 Director of the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research; Professor William Powrie鈥 Professor of Geotechnical Engineering in the School of Civil Engineering and the Environment; and Professor David Richardson鈥 Deputy Director of the Optoelectronics Research Centre鈥 were elected in recognition of their contributions to engineering.
Professor Phil Nelson鈥 Deputy Vice鈥揅hancellor鈥 comments: 鈥淚 would like to offer many congratulations to each of the professors on their Fellowships. As well as being richly deserved鈥 having three new Fellows is a fantastic outcome for the University and highlights the enourmous wealth of engineering excellence here at Southampton.鈥
The Academy honours the UK鈥檚 most distinguished engineers. It aims to take advantage of the engineering knowledge they possess and, through the interdisciplinary character of its membership, it provides a unique breadth of engineering experience to further the art and practice of engineering in all its forms.
Election to the Academy is by invitation only, with up to 60 Fellows elected each year from nominations made by existing Fellows. They are distinguished by the title 鈥楩ellow of The Royal Academy of Engineering鈥 and the designatory letters 鈥楩REng鈥. Honorary Fellows and Foreign Members who have made exceptional contributions to engineering are also elected.
