A reconstruction of an 18th century French Admiral鈥檚 gig, crewed by University of Southampton students and other enthusiasts鈥 will sail up the Beaulieu River to moor at the historic maritime village of Buckler鈥檚 Hard on Saturday 25 July 2009. The 38 foot long gig鈥 called Int茅grit茅鈥 is expected to arrive at around 2.00pm.
Archaeologists from the University of Southampton will also be at Buckler鈥檚 Hard offering practical taster sessions to the village鈥檚 visitors throughout the day.
The activities鈥 part of the British Festival of Archaeology鈥 will feature opportunities to try out flint knapping鈥 boat building techniques, geophysics, pot making, and brass rubbing. Hampshire County Council will be helping people find out more about the archaeology of their local area. University of Southampton archaeologist Lucy Blue who is a presenter on the BBC series Oceans will also be there.
Organiser Dr Louise Revell from the School of Humanities said:鈥 It will be a day the whole family can enjoy. Archaeology has become incredibly popular following the success of TV programmes such as Time Team. We want to spark enthusiasm in people of all ages by giving them the chance to have a go.鈥
