University staff are advised that the Honorary Degree Committee (HDC) will be meeting on 22 October 2009 to consider proposals for the conferment of Honorary Degrees in 2010.
You are invited to submit nominations to be considered by the HDC; these should be sent to the HDC secretary by Friday‚ 25 September 2009‚ using a pro forma* and enclosing a brief‚ one-page CV of each nominee. Applications will then be sent to the appropriate Faculty for endorsement. Nominations received after this date will not be admitted. Members of the University may seek views about possible nominations from their colleagues‚ and should be aware that the HDC particularly welcomes the nomination of female candidates. The University is able to confer honorary Masters’ degrees, as well as doctorates.
In no circumstances should a person nominated be informed that their name has been put forward. Please ensure that complete confidentiality is observed.
When making recommendations to Senate and Council, the HDC normally takes into account the following considerations:
• Personal distinction and public service
• Connection with the University, the City, or the region
• National or international distinction in the nominee’s field.
*The pro forma is available from the HDC secretary, Gillian James: g.james@soton.ac.uk.
