Computer switch off shows big energy savings

To identify the impact on energy consumption from computers left on overnight and to predict the potential energy and Carbon dioxide savings if all non鈥恊ssential computers and ancillary equipment were switched off out of hours, 365 computers were switched off in building 58.

The results (see link, below) show clearly that if these behaviours were adopted on a University-wide basis the savings could be staggering.

In response to these findings鈥 Environment Manager Neil Smith commented: “Switching off electrical equipment out of hours is a quick and easy way to reduce your carbon footprint. If we all switch off, we can make a big difference.”
