Flight cancellations and the start of term

We are currently doing our best to assist staff and students abroad on University business and due back to the UK this week鈥 with alternative travel arrangements to help them return to Southampton as soon as possible.

The University will cover the cost of reasonable steps taken to get staff and students鈥 abroad on University business鈥 back to Southampton and any sensible extra costs incurred as a result of longer than planned time spent away.

Current Advice (Friday 23 April)

UK airspace has reopened. advises travellers that:

鈥淎irlines will be responsible for bringing flight schedules back on track and passengers should check with their airline before going to their departure airport.鈥

You may wish to check the Foreign and Commonwealth Office website:

If taking an alternative route back to the UK, international students are advised to check their visa conditions before travelling, as they may not be able to enter countries other than the UK as part of their journey.

Flight bookings

As of this morning, insurance companies have agreed that there is no longer a problem with cancellation cover for new travel bookings. The University鈥檚 updated guidance is that Schools and Services may now make travel bookings.
