Icebergs on the high seas – in times gone by and in a changing world, part of the new SeaCity Lecture Series – Thursday 8th March

The scientific and historic importance of icebergs, ranging from evidence for 鈥渋ceberg armadas鈥 in the distant past, through the story of the iceberg that sank RMS Titanic 100 years ago, to the present role of Greenland鈥檚 icebergs in a warming world.

Dr Bob Marsh, Physical Oceanographer, University of Southampton

The life of an iceberg combines drama and beauty, from the moment when a large fragment of ice suddenly 鈥渃alves鈥 from a glacier, to the serene passage of sculpted bergs through polar seas. Dr Marsh has been leading a research project to include icebergs in complex computer models of the oceans and climate, so that we can more fully understand their life cycle and how this might affect us as the planet warms.
