Seminar: The Effects of Austerity on Active Citizenship in Europe – 7 December

Public Policy@Southampton invites you to a聽Seminar: 9.00am – 4.30pm on Friday 7th December in the Senate Room,聽B37.

Following the debate in the Houses of Parliament on 6th Dec, this seminar explores the findings of a study led by Dr Bryony Hoskins at the University of Southampton for the European Commission (EC) which warns of the dangers of concentrating solely on economic policies to create growth in European countries.

This event explores the findings of a study led by Dr聽Bryony Hoskins at the University of Southampton for the European聽Commission (EC) which warns of the dangers of concentrating solely on聽economic policies to create growth in European countries.

The report Participatory Citizenship in the European Union funded by聽a 鈧274,996 grant from the EC examines how and to what extent,聽people in Europe actively take part in society, communities and聽politics, and identifies any barriers to this.

Lead researcher from Southampton, Dr Bryony Hoskins says, 鈥淚n the聽current harsh economic climate across Europe there has been a loss of聽trust in political leaders and a move towards more extremist parties.聽It is important for people, especially the young and unemployed,聽to聽have their voices heard in the political decision making to mitigate聽this.

鈥淭he study maps the state of play on levels of citizen engagement,聽and identifies policies and practices to facilitate this across聽Europe to help find effective strategies to encourage people to get聽involved.鈥

This research was funded by the EC, Europe for Citizens Programme聽with partners from Aarhus University, European Institute for聽Education and Social Policy, University of Giessen, Tre University,聽University of Utrecht, LLAKES/IoE, NFER and Citizenship Foundation.
