The Staff Engagement Survey results are now out and show that 70 per cent of staff who filled in the questionnaire are engaged with their work at the University. This figure is a six percentage points increase on the last survey in 2014 when the score was 64 per cent.

The figure compare favourably with the 24 universities which make up the Russell Group where the average engagement score is 72 per cent.

Why is engagement so important?Â
The engagement score shows whether staff feel happy and valued at work; also whether they feel proud, motivated and would recommend the University as a place to work. The way staff are feeling affects our principle of collegiality which is so key to achieving our strategic goals.
How is the engagement score worked out?
It’s worked out from the average score of the following five questions:
- I am proud to work for the University
- I would recommend the University as a great place to work
- I would recommend the University as a great place to study
- I feel a strong sense of belonging to the University
- Working here makes me want to do the best work I can
Response rate also increases
The response rate for this year’s survey also increased with 68 per cent of staff filling the survey in compared to only 54 per cent in 2014.
Areas for improvement
The survey indicates that improvements are needed in the following areas:
- Communicating locally
- Managing change more effectively
- How we work together
What happens next?
Comprehensive results will be out at the end of June which will include recommendations for improvements. We will also share themes from the free text comments from staff as areas to review and act upon.
In the autumn, teams will be asked to analyse their respective results and produce action plans for 2-3 key areas that need improvement in their areas.
