The University and Students’ Union are proud to join forces to celebrate Black History Month throughout October with a variety of events open to all staff and students.
This year celebrates 70 years since the Empire Windrush brought over settlers from the Caribbean to help rebuild Britain after the war. Now black culture is embedded within many areas of society and Black History Month is an opportunity for us to celebrate this.

Professor Bashir Al-Hashimi, Dean of Physical Sciences and Engineering and Chair of the University Race Equality Committee, said:
Black History Month provides a welcome opportunity to celebrate past achievements. It also enables us to consider next steps to embed a more inclusive, equal and racially-diverse culture at our institution.
