City of Culture would be a prestigious feather in Southampton’s cap and the bid website proudly claims that Southampton is “a city of culture, lots of culture; a city of music, sport, dance, food, heritage, art and theatre”. With the demise of Nuffield Southampton Theatres, I think the city’s ambition to achieve City of Culture is, sadly, unlikely to be realized. Theatre is not the only benchmark of culture, however, to lose one theatre may be regarded as a misfortune; to lose both looks like carelessness.
