International Women鈥檚 Day (IWD), 8 March, celebrates the achievements of women and raises awareness about women鈥檚 equality.聽 This year the theme is 鈥溾�� and that from challenge comes change.
On 8 March at 19:00 Public Engagement with Research Unit (PERu), as part of (Southampton Science and Engineering Festival), presents Research Caf茅 #39!
At this informal online event, you can listen or take part in three discussions with our researchers, on:
- COVID-19 and what we can learn for 鈥榯he next time鈥�;
- Disrespect and abuse during childbirth; and
- Connecting communities to alleviate loneliness and social isolation.
Marking International Women鈥檚 Day, each discussion will have a partial focus on women and gender inequalities.

In 2002, staff at the University formed a group, (Women in Science, Engineering and Humanities).
鈥淲iSET+ mirrors the mission of IWD鈥檚 in that we support women at the University of Southampton enabling them to achieve their full potential by shaping university policies and culture, such as supporting Athena SWAN activities, reviewing the promotion process, raising the importance of work-life balance, mentoring and running equality, diversity and inclusion events.鈥�

鈥淎lthough WiSET+ are not leading any activities this year for IWD due to COVID, 聽in the past years, we have disseminated packs of , and hosted science workshops.鈥�
Every year WiSET+ invites champions of equality to give the prestigious and give which reward and recognise individuals in the university that go above and beyond their role to promote gender equality. WiSET+ has also worked on raising the visibility of women, commissioning two mosaic pieces of art made from hundreds of photos of university women and hosting an art exhibition 鈥榳omen in academia鈥�.
