Festival of Social Science begins

The University of Southampton is once again proud to be part of the national Economic and Social Research Council’s (ESRC) Festival of Social Science, now in its 20th year.

The Festival of Social Science is an annual celebration of the social sciences and promotes UK social science research to new audiences.

This year’s event programme runs from 22 October to 13 November. University experts are running events on current topics, from climate change and the cost of living to education and support for future generations.

Free events taking place include:

– 29 October 2022, 10:00 -12:00 or 14:00 -16:00 at Highfield Campus.

Suitable for families, this event explores how preschool children understand the multiple meanings and social uses of written numbers and includes an exciting outdoor number hunt.

– 7 November and 8 November 2022, 18:00 – 20:00, online.

In these two workshops, practise using Google Earth, spaceborne imagery and JavaScript to monitor coasts and learn how households can prepare for coastal flood risks.

– 9 November 2022, 10:00 -12:30, The Art House, 178 Above Bar Street, SO14 7DW

This event focuses on housing affordability and features tenant activists, industry experts and speakers on the cost of housing, mediation with landlords, eviction and campaigning.

– 9 November 2022, 16:00 – 18:00, online

This event focuses on the methodological approach – Digital Stories – developed by the Autism Community Research Network @ Southampton (ACoRNS).
