Whether you are working at home or on campus, the devices you use to access your work and the university network must be protected. Cyber criminals can be sneaky and use any opportunity to try to trick you into downloading malicious software (malware).

There are several best practices you can adopt to help protect your device, whether it’s your personal device (BYOD) or a university-managed device. Ìý

Ensure antivirus software is installed Ìý

Personal devices Ìý

• Make sure has been installed and is kept up to date. Some devices already have antivirus protection pre-installed, such as Windows 10 (or above) and macOS (2016 or sooner); therefore, ensure it is switched on.
  
• The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) provides for different operating systems such as Android, macOS, Linux and more. â¶Ä¯Ìý
• Your device should work on an up-to-date operating system and automatically receive updates. â¶Ä¯Ìý

University managed devices Ìý

• These devices already have antivirus software enabled; therefore, you shouldn’t install any other antivirus product. Ìý

Download applications from legitimate sources Ìý

• Both university-managed devices and personal devices can benefit from at the University. Ìý

• Be sure to use the official application stores such as , or where possible. 

Avoid using websites that may seem suspicious, or you are unaware of Ìý

• If you think a website may seem suspicious, don’t click on any links, disclose any personal information and close the webpage down. â¶Ä¯â€¯Ìý

Always lock your devices when not in use Ìý

• Lock your device when you’re not using it, and set up a strong password. This will make it harder for an unauthorised user to try and access a device left unattended, lost or stolen.
