The University is continuing its ambitious programme of rejuvenation and refurbishment across our campuses and will shortly begin a series of works to improve the infrastructure of Engineering Square on the Highfield Campus. These works will culminate in the demolition of the Faraday Building, which has been vacant for several years. The project map below highlights the impacted area.

Wates Group have been appointed as the contractor for this project and site set up and preparation works will begin on 14 August 2023. They will be taking a sequenced approach to the works to minimise their impact, however there will inevitably be some disruption to this part of Highfield Campus.
Parking spaces surrounding this area will be removed and alterations to pedestrian routes and traffic movement will also be implemented during various parts of the programme. Wates will install full wayfinding signage and will provide access for deliveries. Banksmen will be on site to ensure the safety of all movements through the area. Where possible disabled parking and parking for clinical patients will be kept and Emergency services vehicle access will be maintained throughout the project.
Noise, dust and vibration mitigation methods will be used across the site. This will include the installation of solid hoarding, real time monitoring systems for dust and vibration, use of atomisers to dampen the area and reduce dust from demolition and the use of hydraulics to minimise the noise and vibration during certain phases of the works.
The Project Team has been actively engaging with key representatives from the buildings impacted by this project. If you have any questions, please feel free to get in touch with the Team via estatedevelopment@soton.ac.uk
The key programme dates are as follows:
- Site set up and installation of Hoarding: 14 August 2023
- Beginning of works on site: 11 September 2023
- Infrastructure works complete: Autumn 2024
- Beginning of Faraday podium and tower demolition: Summer 2024
- Project completion: Early 2025
Full details of the project, including Wates’ phasing strategy and proposed changes to pedestrian and vehicular access can be found at .
This project plays a key role in improving the service infrastructure on our Highfield campus. We are also developing designs for a replacement building on this site that will provide the appropriate space to help support the University’s strategic objectives.
