As part of a new three-year project, the University is planning to migrate modules from our current virtual learning environment (VLE), , to the latest version of the platform, Blackboard Ultra.
This project aims to upgrade the Blackboard experience by introducing new features, a modernised user interface as well as an opportunity for course enhancements and additional training opportunities. It will also improve the student experience by championing accessibility and developing student inclusion and wellbeing as outlined in the .

Why are we moving to Blackboard Ultra?
- Recently, it was announced that Blackboard Original will no longer receive ongoing support or further developments.
- It has been identified that a significant amount of our Blackboard modules are falling below accessibility standards.
- We also received feedback from both staff and students that the platform isn鈥檛 as user friendly as other more modern tools and lacks consistency across courses.
This is why we are introducing Blackboard Ultra to help address these concerns and deliver features staff and students have been asking for.
What鈥檚 been happening so far?
- In preparation for this project, the in January 2023, to deliver a more modern navigation and landing page.
- Over recent months, the project team has been engaging with key stakeholders and understanding the minimum teaching requirements for Blackboard modules, known as the .
- The project team has created a group of Early Adopters who will help test, explore and feedback on the new platform, helping us shape the transition to Blackboard Ultra.
Next steps
The aim is to migrate the majority of the Year 1 modules onto Blackboard Ultra ready for the start of the next academic year (September 2024). The project team will continue to work alongside the Early Adopters group and engage with the academic staff who will be impacted by this transition in the coming months. From April this year, training and development opportunities will be provided, offering staff a variety of support, both online and in-person.
