LGBT+ History Month 2024: Get involved

Every February, LGBT+ History Month is marked across the country, to remember, celebrate, and raise awareness of the history of sexualities and gender identities as well as the contributions of the LGBT+ community to our history. This year’s theme ‘Under the Scope’ highlights the contributions of LGBT+ peoples’ to the field of Medicine and healthcare.

The below events are taking place throughout the month, organised by our student and staff community, as well as some resources and support to help you to learn more about the LGBT+ community.

Get creative and design a print to be used on t-shirts worn by University of Southampton volunteers at . The shortlist will be announced on Thursday 1 March, with plenty of prizes available to all who are selected. . .

Queering Connections: Triangulations
30 January – 25 February, The Winchester Gallery, WSA
In this exhibition, three women – Katherine Anteney, Sally Schuh, and Louise Siddons are brought together for a queer experiment in co-creative, collaborative cartography, curated in conversation with the WSA artists book collection.

To celebrate LGBT+ History Month, the Library is delighted to welcome Dr Brendan J Dunlop, author of The Queer Mental Health Workbook, who will be joining David Wright in conversation.

Southampton Stonewall Lecture 2024: Why We Need Queer Kinship Now More Than Ever: Lessons from German History
Thursday 22 February, 18:00-20:00, Avenue Campus
In this lecture, Professor Jennifer Evans asks us to think about how the queer and trans past has often been drawn upon to make a series of claims about liberal democracy itself, including the place of identity in rights-based discourses of experience, policy and governance.

Catch a free film screening of Desert Hearts. A romantic drama film set in 1950s Reno; it tells the story of a university professor who finds her true self through a relationship with a more self-confident woman.
