EDI Symposium – 23-25 April

Join a range of events as part of our three-day EDI Symposium from 23 to 25 April, an essential platform for enhancing Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion at our university. The symposium will address key themes such as race equality, mental health, disability inclusion, and social mobility.

Through interactive workshops, expert discussions, and panels, we aim to foster an inclusiveÌý environment. These sessions are opportunities for staff, students, and leadership to collaborate and contribute to our EDI goals. We encourage your active participation in shaping a more equitable University community.

Day One: Emphasis on Race Equality and Intersectionality, Tuesday, 23 AprilÌý

Overview and discussion on progress, challenges, and future steps in some of our race equality initiatives.

11:45 AM – 12:30 PM (Online)

This session will explore how the University’s Awarding Gap Project has delivered student led, staff supported activity to increase belonging and inclusion for the Black student community.

Day Two: Advancing Mental Health and Social Mobility at Southampton, Wednesday, 24 April

Learn more about Southampton’s recent University Mental Health Charter Award and our strategies to continue enhancing mental health and well-being at our university.

1:00 PM – 1:45 PM (In-person)

In this session, learn about the creation of the Network, its initiatives for boosting social mobility and fostering a sense of belonging at the University, and the framework being developed to evaluate their impact. Gain insights into the intersection of social mobility within our institution and discover ways staff and students can contribute to enhancing it.

2:00 PM – 2:45 PM (Online)

This session will introduce the audiences to student and staff support offered at the University of Southampton. A fictional case study will be explored to help illustrate how the teams work together to support both staff and students in their wellbeing journeys.

Day Three: Enhancing Inclusion through Language, Community Networks, and EDI Strategy, Thursday, 25 April

Familiarise yourself with the University’s updated Inclusive Language Guide and explore how the words we use are instrumental in ensuring everyone in our community is heard, represented, and welcomed.

11:45 AM – 12:30 PM (In-person)

EDI Staff Networks play a key role in fostering a supportive environment for staff and postgraduate students. Through the perspective of the University Disability Staff Network and Neurodivergent Group, this session will explore the aims and roles of staff networks. The discussion will focus on why staff networks matter and the challenges that can be faced in creating a sustainable and impactful network.

1:00 PM – 1:45 PM (Online)

In 2020 we published our 5 year Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Strategic Plan, in this session we review the progress of the current EDI strategy and mission.
