A few research groups at the University already use national scientific facilities at Harwell (such as Diamond Light Source, ISIS, Central Laser Facility) and some even have a presence at the Research Complex. The recent EPSRC instrument development award for a lab-scale soft X-ray microscope for biological systems on the Harwell campus (in collaboration with the Rosalind Franklin Institute and the Central Laser Facility), which will involve setting up a laboratory in the Research Complex, may provide an opportunity for Southampton to have a more visible presence at Harwell ().
There are over 200 organisations on the campus working in advanced manufacturing and materials, big data and supercomputing, energy and environment, life science and healthcare, space and satellite applications.
