University Celebrates UK Disability History Month

The University is celebrating throughout November and December. This year the theme is Livelihood and Employment. A variety of events will be hosted throughout the month the to increase awareness of disability and promote disability equality.

The winning image, created by Melissa Allada, is a textile piece that raises awareness about sensory overwhelm and coping methods to reduce it. Inspired by her own sensory blanket, the piece is weighted with pockets of air to provide comfort and pressure. Its tactile elements of raised yarn and different stitches can be picked or pulled apart. Often overlooked, it brings attention to hypersensitivity to textures, fabrics, and temperature that can affect many in their daily lives.
