Web Science Institute Announces Knowledge Exchange and Enterprise (KEE) Fund Awardees

The Web Science Institute (WSI), one of University of Southampton’s five Strategic Research Institutes, is pleased to announce this year’s awardees to its which include generative AI and cultural exchange, public participation in envisioning an AI City of Excellence for Southampton and an AI model for the sustainable management of grasslands.

The WSI brings together the university’s world-class, interdisciplinary, socio-technical expertise in web science, data science and artificial intelligence to leverage the unique role of online technologies in tackling global challenges.

This fund is designed to stimulate Knowledge Exchange activities with external partners in business, industry, local government, public sector or charitable organisations, community bodies, and the wider public.

The 2024-25 Funding Call attracted exceptionally high-quality research proposals from all five university faculties, and the WSI is pleased to announce this year’s awardees:

  • SAAFE: human-centred design principles for deliberative technologies: Prof Matt Ryan in partnership with /
  • Harnessing the power of a physics-informed Geospatial AI model for the sustainable management of UK grasslands (GeoAI-Grass): Songyan Zhu in partnership with 
  • QUALITAI: integrating qualitative approaches into AI systems: Dr Craig Webber in partnership with Zig Zag Insights
  • Bridging generations and cultures: enhancing refugee women’s access to information through generative AI and cultural exchange: Dr Chi Ying Lam and Dr Tan Viet Tuyen Nguyen, in partnership with Cross-Culture Hub
