The Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute (SMMI) is delighted to host two special lectures by acclaimed climate scientist Professor Michael E. Mann 鈥 Presidential Distinguished Professor at the University of Pennsylvania and leading voice in climate research and policy.

On Tuesday 6 May 2025 at 15:00, Professor Mann will deliver Beyond the Hockey Stick at the Charnock Lecture Theatre, National Oceanography Centre.
This lecture explores how paleoclimate records and climate modelling across the past two millennia help reveal the unprecedented scale of modern human-caused warming. Revisiting the ground-breaking 鈥淗ockey Stick鈥 graph he co-authored over two decades ago, Professor Mann will reflect on the lessons of climate history and what they tell us about our current trajectory.

This powerful talk examines the forces behind today鈥檚 anti-science movement鈥攚hat Mann calls the 鈥渟ix P鈥檚鈥: plutocrats, politicians, polluters, petrostates, propagandists, and press. Drawing on case studies from climate denial to COVID-19 misinformation, he will map out the funding, strategies, and stakes behind science disinformation鈥攁nd offer a roadmap for resistance.
