Why you should apply to a UoS Internship:

How to apply:

The application process for individual internships varies depending on the business.

Once you have successfully secured an internship position, the Work Experience Team will be in contact to ensure you are prepared for your internship and have completed all necessary documents relevant to the role.

This includes but is not limited to:

  • Completing right to work checks and payroll documents (where necessary)
  • Completing an online internship agreement form when provided
  • Filling in monthly timesheets and submitting them on time (where necessary)
  • Completing online feedback detailing your experience of your internship once it has concluded

You have access to different types of support before and during your UoS Internship:

  • You can get support for making through UoS Career Hub.
  • You can book anÌýAsk the Adviser appointmentÌýto receiveÌýbespoke one-to-one career advice.
  • You will be supportedÌýduring your internship with a check-inÌýfrom the Work Experience Team after you start.

ÌýAm I eligible?

The following students and recent graduates are able to take advantage of our UoS Internships:
Ìý
  • Undergraduates on any course and year group
  • Masters students
  • PhD students (you must seek confirmation from your PhD supervisor that you can be made available to complete an internship)
  • Recent graduates and alumni (must have graduated less than 12 months prior to internship start date)
  • International students (subject to visa restrictions*)
  • Turing Scheme and students on a year abroad (provided you have returned to the UK for the internship)
  • All students studying at the University of Southampton can complete one UoS Internship per academic year (01 AugustÌýto 31 July). Please see the ‘How does it work?’ section for more details

Frequently Asked Questions - Eligibility and Considerations

Q: Who can apply for a UoS Internship?
A: All students studying at the University of Southampton and recent graduates (up to one year) are eligible.
Ìý
Q: How many internships can I do per academic year?
A: You can complete one UoS Internship per academic year (1 August – 31 July). If you have also completed an Ignite Internship or CVP Internship, you may complete an additional UoS Internship in the same year.

Q: Why are Ignite Internships exempt?
A: Ignite Internships and CVP Internships are exempt as these are for Widening Participation (WP) students, and the university policy is to support WP students from disadvantaged backgrounds to gain more work experience opportunities.

Q: How is the internship counted against the academic year?
A: The start date decides the academic year it falls into.
•Ìý Ìý Example: If you start an internship in June 2025 and it continues into September 2025, it counts as the 2024/25 academic year. After it finishes, you can still start another internship in the 2025/26 year (up until July 2026).

Q: Can I apply for more than one internship?
A: Yes, you can apply for multiple UoS Internships but you may only complete one per academic year (unless combined with an Ignite Internship or CVP Internship).

Q: Why can students only complete one internship per academic year?
A: This is to ensure as many students as possible have the opportunity to complete an internship. By doing this, we know more students will gain the skills and experience which are needed when they start applying for graduate roles.

Q: What other work experience opportunities could I consider at the University in addition to UoS Internships?
A: We also have other work experience opportunities, which include
•Ìý Ìý Student Innovation Project – up to 250 students per year – you can complete many (1 per round)
•Ìý Ìý Student Innovation Challenge – up to students 100 per year - you can complete many (1 per round)
•Ìý Ìý Forage – online simulated work experience and unlimited access
•Ìý Ìý Apply direct to employers for work experience opportunities and unlimited access.

ÌýHow does it work?

Key facts about the UoS Internships programme:
Ìý
  • Internships can be completed during Easter and summer breaks, or during term-time
  • Internships may take place in-person, virtually, or hybrid
  • Working hours for full-time internships are 35 hours per week
  • Opportunities are available within all sectors and organisations of various sizes
  • UoS InternshipÌýroles are advertised on throughout the academic year
  • You can apply for many UoS Internships and complete one internship per academic year (01/08/25 to 31/07/26)
  • The start date of your internship determines which academic year it is counted in. For example, if you start in June 2025 and it continues into September 2025, it still counts as part of the 2024/25 academic year. Once it finishes, you can start another internship in the new 2025/26 year, up until July 2026.
  • All students studying at the University of Southampton can complete one UoS Internship per academic year. Students who have completed an Ignite Internship or CVP InternshipÌýprogramme are able to complete an additional internship in the same academic year.
