Chiara’s journey began 10 years ago as a band 5 registered nurse, very new to the demanding world of critical care. Her path to advanced practice would require not just clinical skill, but the ability to adapt to a steep learning curve that would fundamentally transform her role.
Studying at the University of Southampton
"I started the MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice as part of the HEE Pathway for Advanced Clinical Practice," Chiara explains.
The course supported my career progression and provided me with the tools to be able to work alongside the medical team, learning from theory and applying my knowledge to clinical practice at the same time.
Chiara, MSc Advanced Clinical Practice
The highlights of my experience at the University of Southampton were sharing my experience with other professionals who were going through the same challenge, learning with them and from them, networking and creating lifetime friendships.
I enjoyed attending classes that had been tailored to equip me with knowledge and skills transferable to my place of work. I loved all the resources and support offered by the library services as they helped me build competence, method, and confidence in my research skills."
Career progression
Today, Chiara has come full circle, working in the same cardiothoracic critical care unit where she started, but now as an advanced critical care practitioner. She works as an appreciated member of the medical team working autonomously alongside doctors.
Her transformation demonstrates how the right educational pathway, combined with peer support and excellent resources, can empower healthcare professionals to reach their full potential.
Through Southampton's MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice, Chiara gained not just knowledge and skills, but the confidence and competence to practice at an advanced level, ultimately enhancing patient care in one of the most challenging clinical environments.
