“Room” is an ambitious new composition by Benjamin Mawson‚ composer and virtual performance developer‚ and Postgraduate Research Student in Music at the University of Southampton.
Taking the premise of Alvin Lucier’s iconic 1969 sound work “I am sitting in a room” the composer turns the sounds of his speaking voice into instruments of a virtual orchestra in the digital studio.
Constructed in layers that interweave and develop over time and throughout the space in which they are heard, each audition is unique as the listener moves around within the soundscape. Firmly connected to history and memory, this music examines the relations between the remembered, learned and imagined, as fleeting glimpses of continually shifting soundworlds encircle each other.
Refreshments will be served. The performance takes place within the latest John Hansard Gallery exhibition, Terry Smith: Parallax.
