A group of five second year students have designed and built a structure that now stands in front of our . The structure has been realised as part of the Faculty of Engineering and the Environment’s first Design Show.
Integral to the design curriculum, ten student groups designed structures that were presented to, and judged by, an industry panel which included representatives from and . The project ties in with an increased connection between our Civil Engineering design curriculum and Southampton City Council.
The design brief asked for a temporary structure for a site in Southampton adjacent to the medieval walls. This winning structure was designed to screen an existing unsightly footbridge, and to create a celebratory gateway for visitors.
The Design Show showcases Professor William Powrie’s, Dean of Engineering and Environment, views on engineering at the University:
鈥淥ur students learn the principles of engineering during their studies and demonstrate their understanding through designing, building and testing exciting products that will make a difference to people鈥檚 lives.鈥
The structure now stands at our Boldrewood Campus. This is the first year that a student group鈥檚 design has been constructed at full scale, and the department has plans to make it an annual event.
