After successfully winning the silver medal in the Laser sailing class at London 2012, Pavlos became a national hero in his home country as the first person ever from Cyprus to win an Olympic medal of any kind.

Countless accolades passed his way 鈥 including a statue in his honour at his sailing club in Limassol and his image appearing on a Cypriot postage stamp 鈥 but Pavlos has continued to work hard in the intervening years determined to go one better and stand atop the podium in 2016. He also came back to complete his degree in Ship Science in 2013 but remains driven by his passion to sail.

鈥淎ny medal would make me happy but I鈥檓 going for gold,鈥 Pavlos told CNN earlier this year.

The begins today with races continuing until Monday, 15 August when the medals are confirmed.聽 The also commences today with Lily Xu looking to repeat her gold medal-winning form from London 2012 joined by Southampton graduate Alison Young in the same competition. We鈥檒l be profiling Alison on SUSSED tomorrow.
