After 30 years at the University, Professor Michael ‘Mike’ Kelly听is retiring. We hope that you will join us on Thursday 29 September 2016 to thank and congratulate him for all he has done for the University, for Modern Languages in the UK and for language policies in Europe.

Mike joined the University as Professor of French in 1986, after 14 years at University College Dublin (UCD). He was Head of the School of Humanities from its establishment in 2004 – 2009, and has also served as head of Modern Languages and as Director of the Subject Centre for Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies.
Professor Kelly’s听contribution has been exceptional, through his scholarship, educational work and external engagement.听In addition, he has a formidable international reputation, having served on the Board of the European Language Council since 1997.
Professor Kelly听has published widely on modern French intellectual culture and language policy: his work has been recognised in France听with the prestigious awards of ‘Chevalier dans l鈥檕rdre des arts et des lettres’ and ‘Officier dans l鈥檕rdre des palmes acad茅miques’. His contribution to the place of Modern Languages in Higher Education has been central to UK policy-making, and听was recognised in 2010听with an Honorary Fellowship of the Chartered Institute of Linguists and in 2014听with the award of an OBE.
