30 years of service – celebrating Professor Mike Kelly, OBE

After 30 years at the University, Professor Michael ‘Mike’ KellyÌýis retiring. We hope that you will join us on Thursday 29 September 2016 to thank and congratulate him for all he has done for the University, for Modern Languages in the UK and for language policies in Europe.

Mike joined the University as Professor of French in 1986, after 14 years at University College Dublin (UCD). He was Head of the School of Humanities from its establishment in 2004 – 2009, and has also served as head of Modern Languages and as Director of the Subject Centre for Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies.

Professor Kelly’sÌýcontribution has been exceptional, through his scholarship, educational work and external engagement.ÌýIn addition, he has a formidable international reputation, having served on the Board of the European Language Council since 1997.

Professor KellyÌýhas published widely on modern French intellectual culture and language policy: his work has been recognised in FranceÌýwith the prestigious awards of ‘Chevalier dans l’ordre des arts et des lettres’ and ‘Officier dans l’ordre des palmes académiques’. His contribution to the place of Modern Languages in Higher Education has been central to UK policy-making, andÌýwas recognised in 2010Ìýwith an Honorary Fellowship of the Chartered Institute of Linguists and in 2014Ìýwith the award of an OBE.
