University awarded Silver TEF

The University has been awarded a Silver Teaching Excellence & Student Outcomes Framework (TEF) rating by the Office for Students (OfS).

The TEF ratings were introduced by the government to measure the quality of teaching at Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in England.

In a video email sent to all staff, our Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Christopher Snowden, shared his reaction to the good news.

In its assessment of Southampton’s metrics and written submission for 2018, the TEF Panel highlights clear evidence of the University’s:

  • support for all new undergraduates through their transition to higher education
  • strategic commitment to enhancing the quality of teaching
  • learning environment in which students participate actively in research
  • investment in physical and digital resources supporting student learning
  • excellent student continuation and progression rates
  • effective support and initiatives focused on employability

As Sir Christopher mentioned, in April it was announced that Southampton had risen six places to 20th in the Complete University GuideÌýrankings; last week it was announced that Southampton had risen 12 places to 23rdÌýin the Guardian University league table.

We are also confident that our position in the QS world rankings will show a rise, when they are published this evening.

This pattern of improvement in our rankings, together with today’s Silver TEF, is proof that our University strategy of a relentless focus on quality and the student experience, and maintaining the quality of our entry tariffs, is starting to pay dividends.
