On match day, a ‘pop up’ testing station was erected at the ground for the pre-match period.

, Consultant in Diabetes at UHSFT and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in Medicine at our University said:

“We believe that this is the first screening event for type 2 diabetes at an English Premiership football match. Given the number of national football matches and other large sporting events, they are all likely to be attended by some individuals at high risk of type 2 diabetes. Our local approach could very easily be replicated elsewhere. This could do much to provide an early diagnosis or highlight early personal risk of developing type 2 diabetes.”

103 match attendees agreed to have a HbA1c test, which measures how much sugar has been in the blood for the preceding two to three months. Results were available within five minutes of a fingerprick blood sample being taken.

71 men and 30 women with an average age of 57 took part, and 101 of the 103 tests yielded a valid result.

94 results were in the non-diabetes range, five results were in the high-risk range and two results were indicative of type 2 diabetes.

All fans were offered a letter to give to their GP containing their test results.
