Professor Jim Gates, Jr., a theoretical physicist at聽Brown University and president of the American Physical Society, will give the annual Southampton Theory Astrophysics and Gravity (STAG) Research Centre lecture online on Wednesday 12 May 2021 at 16:00.

Einstein said, “Imagination is more important than knowledge.” Turing said, “Sometimes it is the people no one can imagine anything of who do the things no one can imagine.” This lecture titled 鈥楶eople No One Can Imagine Anything Of鈥 describes the speaker’s journey to use the Einstein and Turing observations as inspirations to solve a fifty-year-old puzzle in theoretical physics.
Sylvester James 鈥淛im鈥 Gates, Jr., is well known for work in supersymmetry and supergravity, as well as for his advocacy for science and science education. Gates served on the U.S. President鈥檚 Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, he is a past president of National Society of Black Physicists and the current president of the American Physical Society. He received the 2011 National Medal of Science, the highest award given to scientists in the USA.
Professor Kostas Skenderis, Director of the STAG Research Centre, said:
We are delighted to have Professor Gates delivering the 2021 STAG Online Public Lecture.
Professor Gates鈥 work on quantum gravity and superspace is an inspiration, and his enthusiasm for science is infectious. I am looking forward to hearing his lecture.
