The University of Southampton has risen six places to 17th in this year鈥檚 Guardian University Guide, published on Saturday.

This is further recognition of the University鈥檚 position as one of the best In the UK, after it was placed in the top 15 by the Complete University Guide 2022 in June.
Southampton has also made聽good聽progress in the two main international rankings and has consolidated its place in the global top 100 by the聽exceptional rise of 13聽places to聽77th聽in the QS World University rankings 2022.
Our Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mark E. Smith, said:
鈥What a great way to start a week as we lead up to the new academic year.聽I鈥檓 delighted to see the University has moved up six places in The Guardian. This adds to our very impressive performance in national and international rankings this year,聽remarkably achieved against the backdrop of a global pandemic聽.
I鈥檓 particularly pleased that as The聽Guardian concentrates on education-related measures,聽this latest ranking recognises the hard work that colleagues across the University have made to deliver the best education and experience for our students over what has been a very challenging period.
This is a very encouraging indicator in our ongoing journey to continuously improve all elements of our education, research and enterprise activities. 聽My thanks go to everyone for their contribution and ongoing efforts.聽This means we will launch the new strategy in 2022 from a strong foundation.鈥
The Guardian use nine measures of performance, covering all stages of the student life cycle including entry standards, student satisfaction, value added and career prospects. These are provided for each of the 54 subject areas.
Seven subjects made it into the top ten of the Guide this year, with Engineering: Electronic and Electrical ranked first and Music second. Other top ten positions went to, Engineering: Civil, Geography and Environmental studies, Modern Languages and Linguistics, Philosophy, and Forensic Science and Archaeology, which climbed an impressive 14 places to fifth. In total, the University improved in 19 subject areas.
