We are honoured to welcome Helen Sharman CMG OBE, the first British person in Space, to the University.

Helen became the first British Astronaut in May 1991, aged 27, when she launched, on a Russian Soyuz spacecraft, and spent 8 days orbiting the Earth on the Mir Space Station. She brilliantly describes it all: weightlessness, launch and landing, the cramped capsule, and scenarios which might happen in orbit, travelling at 17,500 miles an hour. Helen heard about applying to become an astronaut on the car radio and didn’t think she stood a chance. Over 13,000 people applied but Helen – practical, friendly, and a team player – was chosen.
