New Appraisal Process – Training, guidance and resources for all staff

From June through to September this year all staff will transition from the existing appraisal/PPDR to the . A wide range of training and resources are available to support all staff to understand the changes and enable them to fulfil their role in the appraisal process.

The new appraisal process will apply to staff at all levels.

A reminder of what is changing:

  • The annual appraisal timeline (appraisal year) will be the same for all staff, starting on 1 August each year. All appraisal conversations will take place between 1 June and 15 September, from summer 2023 onwards
  • All staff will use the online form in MyHR. An improved, printable version of the appraisal form for staff with limited computer access will be available
  • The requirement to assess each objective has been removed. Instead, four new ‘descriptive phrases’ called contribution descriptors have been created. These will be used to provide an overall assessment of an individual’s contribution.
  • A “consistency check”, will be carried out by the appraiser’s line manager (known as the second line reviewer) to ensure fairness and consistency, replacing the old moderation process. There is no indicative distribution curve.
