Researchers Survey – Helping foster a more positive, diverse, inclusive and open research culture

The University is participating in the national Culture, Employment and Development in Academic Research Survey (CEDARS) from 29 May to 16 June. The survey is open to all level 4 – 7 Research and Mixed portfolio academic staff.

“Our people are truly at the heart of everything we do. For our research to be the most creative and impactful that it can be and make the most positive difference in the world, we need to create the very best culture for everyone in our research community to thrive and reach their full potential. Several projects are underway across the University focusing on improving research culture and by sharing your feedback you will help us better understand what is working, where we need to do better and how to prioritise investment and action to ensure the University is a great place to do research.”

Rebecca Hoyle, Concordat Sponsor and Associate Vice-President (Interdisciplinary Research)

Your participation is important

CEDARS is your opportunity to help drive meaningful change. The results of the survey will inform our approach to fostering a healthy, supportive and inclusive research culture at the University through our Researcher Development Concordat Action Plan. By participating in the survey you will also be contributing data across the UK research system and supporting other institutions in their commitment to implementing the principles of the Researcher Development Concordat, which aims to create the best culture for researchers to thrive.

Survey results and recommendations will be published later this year.

Who can complete it?

CEDARS has a strong emphasis on the academic and research community, including those on teaching-only contracts and research support staff. Just 20 minutes of your time will help inform institutional decision-making, and national policy. All Level 4 –7 Research and Mixed portfolio staff have been sent an email invitation to access the survey.

How is my data protected?

All response data are anonymous and not linked to individuals in any way. Whilst the survey captures demographic data, this is only reported on at aggregated university and faculty levels, and there are no opportunities for identifying individuals.

A threshold of 10 responses is applied to all surveys such that results will only be reported if there are more than 10 respondents for a question and no cross-tabulation will be run where that threshold would be lower. Qualitative comments are not shared and are only used to identify areas for improvement; we have a redacted comments policy in place to ensure that verbatim comments are used appropriately.

The Policy & Insight Team, bound by the Market Research Code of Conduct, will have access to the raw data which they will analyse and report on for the University.

The survey has received AREQA ethical approval with approval number 2023/359.

CEDARS is managed and supported by Vitae. .
