University position on the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence tools (e.g. ChatGPT)

Generative AI (GenAI) tools, such as ChatGPT, continue to evolve rapidly and are becoming an embedded element of our everyday technology use. Our learners will live and work in a GenAI shaped world and so engaging with appropriate use of GenAI is becoming a necessary part of education at all levels.  As a university, we need to understand the impact of this in relation to our teaching, learning and assessment.

Current position

The current position of the University on the use of GenAI is outlined on our t and this will be regularly updated as we review our Policy on GenAI.

  • Our current guidance to students is that GenAI tools should not be used to generate content for assessments unless this is specifically authorised by the person responsible for the assessment.
  • In situations where the use of GenAI is permitted, students should follow the guidelines outlined on the site to ensure this is equitably reflected in the teaching, learning and assessment criteria.
  • The unauthorised use of GenAI can be extremely challenging to detect. Student work should notbe put through AI detection tools as there are significant concerns about their accuracy, and such use may infringe GDPR, IP and copyright.

The new  SharePoint site has a series of resources and guidance available for colleagues. This site will develop over time.

Current actions

A working group has been established to advise on policy and practice in teaching, learning and assessment in relation to these tools. This group draws on expertise and experience from across the University, including our students, and the rapidly emerging evidence and practice across the sector.

The working group will be gathering data over the coming months– please contribute your experiences and opinions so that the guidance and support we produce is shaped by our community.

How do I communicate the position on GenAI to my students?

All our continuing students were .  For new students this is an important topic to address in the first few weeks of the programme. All students will receive further communications in due course.

  • This sets out the University’s guidance to students on GenAI use, emphasising that students should not use GenAI in creating work unless told otherwise. You may wish to link to it from your Blackboard sites or communications to students.
  • Remember to emphasise to students the importance of maintaining academic integrity in their working practices and explain why it is important for them to do so in developing their academic skills and knowledge for the future.
