50 years to the day of its first concert, we welcome you to experience the joy of live music at Turner Sims on Tuesday 19 November. Turner Sims is the University of Southampton’s music venue, with big ambitions to build an inclusive world through the joy of live music. Opened at Highfield campus on 19 November 1974, the venue has enriched the lives of communities across Southampton and played an influential role in the region’s music scene.

Celebrate 50 years of joy
From 6:30-7:15pm singer/songwriter Isla Croll performs in The Vibe Lounge. This free foyer event is programmed by The Vibe, a passionate group of music lovers aged 18-25 from all over Southampton. Our exciting projects aim to reach young people, highlighting the amazing music scene in our city!
Join us for classical, jazz and global joy with friends old and new.
At 7:30pm, international artist friends return to the stage for a vibrant evening of music, culminating in the live premiere of Tunde Jegede’s Voyages of the Heart.
Voyages of the Heart is one of the defining projects of Turner Sims’ recent history. It was a commission by Turner Sims and Southampton City Council to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower ship’s departure from Southampton. The music project was inspired by the stories of Southampton’s migrant and refugee communities, collected through the City Archive and a oral history project supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. Due to pandemic restrictions in 2021, it has only ever been experienced on screen.
The premiere is paired with performances from award-winning pianists Federico ColliÌý²¹²Ô»åÌýZoe Rahman, and the highly innovative Piatti Quartet.
New Hartley Library exhibition celebrates Turner Sims at 50
Complementing Turner Sims 50th anniversary programme is a new exhibition in the Hartley Library’s Level 4 Gallery running 14 November 2024 to 10 January 2025. The display explores Turner Sims’ role in nurturing Southampton and the region’s cultural scene today and its ambitions for the next fifty years. This includes iconic images and artefacts, including photographs by John Garfield, which can also be viewed in the Library’s archive.
