New award to develop the next generation of environmental researchers

The University of Southampton and its partners, the , , and have been awarded 拢8 million funding by the UKRI to equip a new wave of doctoral scholars with the skills to lead our responses to climate change and other environmental challenges and meet the needs of business, government and society.

The new NERC Doctoral Landscape Award, led by Professor Rachael James from the School of Ocean and Earth Science, will enable scholars to carry out pioneering and impactful research, complemented by innovative training in research, technological and professional skills.

Professor Rachael James said:

鈥淚GNITE scholars will contribute new knowledge to improve the quality of our environment and accelerate the net zero transition. Our unique partnership with internationally leading research centres and collaborators from business, government and the third sector will enable our scholars to flourish鈥.

IGNITE will recruit at least 15 doctoral scholars each year for the next 5 years. Applications are now invited for PhD projects starting in October 2025: the application deadline is 08 January 2025. Information on projects, eligibility and how to apply can be found on the IGNITE .
