Carole Burns, who heads up Creative Writing, has won the John C. Zacharis First Book Award for her debut short story collection The Missing Woman and Other聽Stories published by Parthian Books last year.

The award, announced in January, is given out each year by Ploughshares, a top聽literary journal in the USA, publishing authors and poets such as Helen Oyeyemi, Kevin Wilson, Alex Epstein, John Burnside and Pascale Petit.聽 Ploughshares profiled Carole Burns in their Winter 2015-16 issue.
Since 1991, the John C. Zacharis First Book Award has honoured the best first book published by an author who has already published work in Ploughshares. The $1,500 award, which is named after Emerson College鈥檚 former president, is judged by the Ploughshares staff editors.
Carole Burns, who’s now working on her second novel, said:
鈥淚鈥檓 really pleased that my story collection has been given this award by Ploughshares.
“My teaching in Creative Writing is deeply informed by my own fiction, so how I build character in these stories, and tease out themes, such as the idea of a 鈥渕issing woman鈥, are at the centre of my work with BA students and postgraduates.
“And the way teaching and writing speak to each other is helpful for both new novels and new students.鈥
