Module overview
This module introduces the core principles and processes of product design. You will explore materiality, colour, form and function through sketching, mock-ups and digital tools. Emphasis is placed on ideation, problem-solving, iterative concept development and visual communication, supported by studio practice, technical workshops and inductions.
On this module, you will develop essential 2D and 3D design skills through hands-on projects and design exercises. The module introduces basic design principles and processes, supporting the development of creative problem-solving and an understanding of how ideas are generated, tested and refined.
You will undertake a series of tasks and projects exploring fundamental aspects of product design. Through making and iterative design, you will gain confidence in translating concepts into physical and visual forms, while experimenting with materials, tools and techniques.
The module also introduces principles of design communication and critical reflection. You will learn to interpret observational information to identify user needs and to communicate design ideas effectively using appropriate media.
