Work Futures is an interdisciplinary research centre that specialises in impactful projects tackling some of the most pressing challenges facing paid and unpaid work.
We deliver leading expertise on labour market issues from digital labour to social care; new ways of working; employees on salaries, in precarious work, and on complex contracts; as well as the self-employed and under-employed. Our rigorous, cutting-edge research is the product of our ongoing collaboration with funders and partners, including the ESRC, AHRC, EPSRC, British Academy, Department for Work and Pensions, and Acas. Based at the University of Southampton, we provide applied policy expertise on work and employment, covering issues such as job quality, healthy working lives, skills, workforce inequalities, entrepreneurship, migration, the creative economy, technology and AI, productivity, industrial relations, hybrid working, green jobs, workforce well-being, and organisational belonging.
As a cultural and creative industries researcher, WFRC provides a vital way for me connect with colleagues across the University and engage with shared concerns around good work, careers pathways and labour conditions.
I explore the intersections of migration and work, with a particular focus on self-employment and entrepreneurship. My research examines how precarity, class, and gender shape people’s work experiences
I am a sociologist of work and applied policy researcher, so the Work Futures Reserach Centre is a great way for me to meet like-minded colleagues from across the university to discuss issues like job quality, workforce inequalities, and changing ways of working.
Im a sociologist of work and organisation and The Work Futures Research Centre enables me to connect with colleagues in a range of disciplines and strengthen my expertise in areas like digital skills and careers, unpaid work and internships, and innovation and digital transformations of organisations.
