• Plan and realise a spatial design project that integrates research and design processes, demonstrating awareness of its economic, environmental, social and cultural impact

The Final Project module focuses on the development and realisation of an independent spatial design project. Students build on research questions and methodological approaches developed in the Design Research and Impact Methods module and refine these into a clearly defined project proposal. The module supports the progression from research and conceptual exploration to the development of a resolved spatial design outcome. Students investigate spatial contexts and contemporary challenges, develop and test design strategies, and communicate their proposals through a combination of visual, spatial and written outputs. Indicative topics and activities may include: - Development and approval of an individual project proposal informed by prior research - Contextual research, spatial analysis and critical engagement with theoretical frameworks and design precedents - Application of research-through-design methodologies and iterative concept development - Use of digital and material tools including spatial modelling, data visualisation, immersive environments (AR/VR/XR), prototyping and fabrication processes - Development of spatial communication strategies including drawings, models, installations or digital prototypes Reflective articulation of design rationale, methodology and project impact - The module culminates in the submission of a final project portfolio demonstrating the integration of research, design development and resolved spatial outcomes.

Learning in this module is primarily self-directed and supported through a studio-based learning environment that encourages experimentation, critical reflection and professional dialogue. Students receive academic guidance through regular supervisory meetings, studio tutorials and group critiques. These sessions support the development of research questions, conceptual approaches and design strategies, while encouraging reflection on the social, ecological and cultural implications of spatial design practice. Teaching and learning methods include: - Individual supervision meetings with an allocated project tutor - Studio-based tutorials and group critiques supporting iterative design development - Project presentations and review sessions - Seminars addressing research methods, spatial design theory and professional practice - Technical workshops supporting digital and material production processes - Independent research and self-directed design development The learning approach emphasises iterative design processes, enabling students to test and refine spatial propositions through both digital and analogue methods. Students are encouraged to engage critically with contemporary spatial challenges and to develop spatial proposals that demonstrate conceptual rigour, technical competence and professional communication.
