Module overview
Microorganisms are key players in the major biogeochemical cycles of Earth’s ecosystems. Ecosystem Cycles and Microbial Communities explores how microbial processes influence the biological, chemical, and geological interactions that shape environments ranging from forests and oceans to extreme habitats. This is an area of intense research activity because human activities are rapidly altering ecosystems, the biosphere, and Earth’s climate. Microorganisms play critical roles in ecosystem functioning, nutrient cycling, and the production and consumption of greenhouse gases. The module introduces students to the diversity of microbial life and the ways microorganisms have shaped Earth’s ecosystems from the origins of life to the Anthropocene.
