About this course

Develop specialist knowledge and practical skills on this MRes Advanced Biological Sciences degree. You’ll gain in-depth knowledge of a chosen research topic and conduct original research, supported by the University of Southampton's experts. You'll develop hands-on skills in collecting and critically evaluating biological data, problem solving, and effective communication.

This degree is excellent preparation for future PhD research, or for a career in a wide range of industries.

Our flexible, research-focused MRes Advanced Biological Sciences course lets you focus on a particular research interest. You can choose to specialise in one of the following:

  • cell and developmental biology
  • microbiology
  • neuroscience
  • molecular and precision bioscience
  • plants and food security
  • ecology and evolution

The balance between teaching and research is different for an MRes than for an MSc. As an MRes student, you will spend more time on your research project and less time on the taught part of the course.

This will enable you to expand your scientific knowledge in your chosen field and develop your research, presentation and scientific communication skills.

The course provides access to:

  • cutting-edge facilities
  • expert mentorship
  • a network of academic and industry-oriented professionals

Your research project will be laboratory or fieldwork-based, depending on on your chosen field of research.

When you apply, we'll ask you to choose a supervisor for your research project. You can explore our list of potential supervisors to learn more about their research areas.
