About this course

¸£Àû×ÅÆ¬ how microbes have key roles in global challenges like antimicrobial resistance, food security and the climate crisis on our BSc Microbiology course.

You'll explore how microbiology impacts all aspects of our lives and the world around us. Developing your knowledge in medical and environmental microbiology, you'll learn about how we can control infectious diseases or use microbes in beneficial ways.

During our BSc Microbiology course you'll also have the opportunity to choose from a range of optional modules to shape your studies to your interests. You'll build skills across a range of microbiology areas and explore topics such as:

  • antimicrobial resistance and its link to
  • understanding the microbiome
  • use of microbes in biotechnology
  • understanding biofilms and their impact

You'll learn about molecules and cells, microbial diversity, polymicrobial communities and microbiomes. You'll also examine how they impact human, animal, plant, and planetary health. You'll study in the Life Sciences building, which is a £50 million state-of-the-art laboratory, which includes teaching and research spaces.

As part of this microbiology bachelor's degree, you'll undertake independent projects on the microbiology topics that interest you the most and study with the support of leading researchers.

Throughout the course, you'll also expand your knowledge in a wider range of subjects available across our biology and biomedical science degrees. When you graduate you'll be prepared for a career in microbiology across a wide range of employment sectors.
