Lindsay-Marie Armstrong is a Professor within Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Southampton; is the Academic Cluster Lead and co-Founder of the Solent Industrial Decarbonisation Cluster as part of the 拢20m UKRI Industrial Decarbonisation Research and Innovation Centre (IDRIC); she is the Deputy Director of the Sustainability and Resilience Institute (SRI); previous co-Founder and Chair of the Clean Carbon University Strategic Research Group (USRG); and previous Director of Student Recruitment for the School of Engineering. Previous responsibilities have included: previous Founder and Chair of the Faculty of Engineering and the Environment鈥檚 Equality and Diversity committee, coordinating two Faculty Bronze awards; member of Senate; member of the IMA Research Committee; and Chair of the Institute of Mathematics Early Career Mathematicians Committee.
She has a BSc (Hons) Mathematics degree and MSc in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). She completed her PhD developing reactive multiphase models for thermochemical conversion processes within coal and biomass fluidised beds. Upon completion she was awarded a New Frontiers Fellowship at the University of Southampton.
Lindsay-Marie develops computational tools for accelerating scale-up of reactive technologies and has extensive knowledge of reactive multiphase modelling, particularly for carbon capture and utilization technologies. She publishes in leading journals (800+ citations), incl. Chem. Eng. J.; Int. J. Heat and Mass Trans.; Int. J. of Multiphase Flow; RSC Faraday Discussions; Frontiers in Chemistry; GCB Bioenergy. She takes a highly strategic and interdisciplinary research approach laying strategically initiated stepping-stones, e.g., external engagement, small grants, etc., to achieve outcomes with significantly high impact. She engages heavily across different sectors with industrial partners, having founded the Solent Cluster for decarbonising the Solent Region (140+ members), policy makers and general public through perception gathering research. She is UoS lead for the Solent Cluster鈥檚 regional Innovate UK Local Industrial Decarbonisation Plan (拢730k); R-CoI and lead bid writer for EP/J020184/1 (拢715k); CoI for EP/K029150/1(拢500k); CoI for EP/N013883/1 (拢610k) and Co-I, EP/V027050/1; (拢25m total, UoS - ~拢600k).
Awards include the Institute of Physics "Award for significant progress in Combustion by an early career researcher" and the Faculty of Engineering and the Environment鈥檚 鈥淒ean鈥檚 award for Early Career Excellence鈥. She has also been nominated for several VC teaching awards.
