His appointment has a Research and Knowledge Exchange & Enterprise (KEE) focus, as such, his aim is to expand the existing portfolio of consultancy and lab service contracts with commercial and academic customers. This includes being the preferred analytical partner of a large international automobile company and a strategic partnership with a leading the US instrument company, LECO.
Prior to joining the University of Southampton, he had a 31.5 year tenure at The Open University, where he was a member of the teams that developed the Ptolemy and GAP instruments for the Rosetta and Beagle2 space missions. Since 2004, he has spent the last 21 years translating this multi-disciplinary know-how to solving challenges back here on Earth. This has included developing an award-winning air quality monitoring system for use on all future UK submarines and an automated analytical system for the World’s largest fragrance company. He is a named inventor on a couple of patents, both of which are in the final stages of being commercially licensed or sold. He has supervised 11 PhD students to completion, five of which had commercial partners.
