Project overview
We propose to test depth-dependent stretching models of highly extended lithosphere at rifted margins by determining stretching factors and strain rates using a combination of seismic imaging and state-of-the-art inverse modelling of subsidence data. Our analysis will focus on conjugate margins in the Eastern Black Sea basin, where a rapid sediment supply has ensured that post-rift subsidence is better constrained than on most rifted margins. Forward and inverse modelling of wide-angle seismic data will be used to determine the crustal thickness variation and the significance of synrift igneous activity. These observations will be integrated with subsidence data to determine the three-dimensional thermal history of the basin.
