Feras, a second year BSc Mathematics student, talks about the support he’s received to help him catch up with the other students on his course.
Why I chose Southampton
I always had a passion for maths, so a mathematics degree felt like the obvious choice. Southampton’s ranking, being part of the Russell Group and the flexibility of the BSc Mathematics course were the deciding factors for me.
The modules were more in line with my interests compared to other universities, and I liked the fact that I could choose my modules in the second and third year. I’m interested in the financial aspects of mathematics and by taking certain modules I’ll be exempt from taking some actuarial exams.
Exploring new mathematical concepts
As an international student, I hadn’t studied further maths at A-level, so I felt that I needed to catch up with the other students on my course. In the end I found this beneficial because it forced me to learn things quickly and gave me different ways of studying. I now feel better equipped even though second year is harder, because I took my studies more seriously in my first year.
Whatever we learn in lectures we implement in problem classes. I really enjoy working this way as it makes it easier to grasp the concepts. The lecturers are very supportive and responsive, and the lectures are all recorded. I find this really helpful when revising.
Career paths
A mathematics degree is such a broad course that you’re not cornered into just one path. People don’t realise there are so many things you can do with this degree.
There are also careers support open days when companies are invited to visit the campus. This is a great opportunity to talk to prospective employers to find out about specific graduate programmes. In my third year I’m planning to use the careers advice and assistance to help me write my CV and apply for jobs.
Making the most of student life
University life isn’t just about studying. Southampton has a wide range of societies, and I’ve joined the Chess Society, which I really enjoy. The University encourages us to socialise and make the most of life outside the lecture hall.
