Our Medical Technology, Innovation and Design (MSc) is unique to the UK
Overview
About us
The School of Healthcare Enterprise and Innovation was formerly known as the Wessex Institute. Our experts use research findings to create practical solutions for healthcare systems and services worldwide. Supporting knowledge exchange from academia to the real-world and fostering business connections are at the heart of everything we do.
We work closely with organisations including the (NIHR) who fund and deliver world-leading health and social care research. Our NIHR partnership is the largest enterprise contract at the University. We also collaborate with groups across healthcare 鈥 from researchers and policymakers to industry and the public.

This aims to create a culture where everyone can thrive, belong and be themselves at work.

Driving the future of MedTech Innovation
-
Kargenera
Liver cancer has one of the poorest survival rates, with many patients living less than two years after diagnosis. Kargenera, a University of Southampton spin-out, uses mRNA technology to supercharge natural killer cells, precisely targeting liver cancer and aiming to boost patient survival by up to 50%. -
Sooba Medical
Blocked ureteric stents cause pain, infection, and repeated surgeries for cancer and kidney patients. Sooba Medical, a University of Southampton spin-out, has developed a next-generation stent inspired by Formula One fluid dynamics to improve flow and prevent blockages - reducing patient suffering, cutting procedures, and potentially saving the NHS millions each year. -
Mini lungs
Chronic lung disease affects millions, yet treatments have barely advanced in decades. Researchers at the University of Southampton are creating 鈥渕ini lungs鈥, 3D organoids grown from patient cells, to replicate real lung function, speed up drug testing, and develop faster, more precise treatments for lung disease and infection.
Our courses
This opportunity allows University of Southampton researchers to submit a selection of their published work, brought together through a unifying narrative essay, for consideration for the award of a PhD.
This opportunity is only available to University of Southampton staff, as an alternative to the standard PhD route.
This route recognises the research activities of staff who have not completed a PhD. The submission should address a common theme and be of sufficient quality that it can be considered equivalent to that of a traditional PhD.
Interested staff are invited to submit an application which will be considered by the School of Healthcare Enterprise and Innovation PhD by publication panel.
Shortlisted candidates are invited for interview and if successful, will register as PhD students with the Faculty of Medicine's Graduate School. Students are expected to undertake the PhD by published work alongside existing work (unless an alternative arrangement is supported by your line manager) and complete within one year of registration.
