Dr Luthra is a Clinical Academic, Consultant Cardiac and Aortic Surgeon at University Hospital Southampton (UHS) and an Associate Professor at University of Southampton (UoS). He has previously trained in US, UK, India and Australia in all aspects of cardiac surgery. His surgical practice involves the entire spectrum of adult cardiac surgical disease with a special interest in surgery for complex diseases of the aortic organ including aortic valve repairs, root and aortic arch surgery and aortic dissections, high risk coronary surgery, reparative valve surgeries of the aortic and mitral valves, heart valve design and function.
He has interests in education and clinical research and audit, especially cardiac surgery outcomes and efficiency of cardiac Operation Room pathways. He has published extensively on clinical outcomes especially in coronary artery bypass surgery, diabetes in cardiac surgery, aortic valve replacements and aortic dissections. He serves as a reviewer for various grant committees and journals and has been a national and international technical advisor on adoption of Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI).
He is a clinical educator involved in selection to University courses and is a GMC accredited Clinical and Educational Supervisor for University students, National trainees and LEDs. He previously served as a Div Director of Medical Education. He is also a member of QWG, JCIE, Royal College of Surgeons (GB and Ireland) for fellowship exams in Cardiothoracic Surgery.
He is an active committee member of the Interventional Procedures Advisory Committee, NICE and an investigator on a number of national and international clinical trials and registries.
